Leptosaurus ?pulchellus

Specimen SCHA 40 , Jura Museum, Willibaldsburg, Eichstaett, Germany

This specimen has been found in summer 1988 in a fossiliferous locality of Late Kimmeridgian age, which lies near Schamaupten (Southern Franconian Alb). The extraordinary concentration of fossils prompted the Jura Museum to carry out excavations since 1989. The most abundant vertebrates were fishes, but also reptiles were collected. The specimen here described is exposed in ventral view  and it is complete and nearly articulated. Anatomical study supports its belonging to Rhynchocephalia and, within this group, to the genus Leptosaurus.(Modified from Renesto and Viohl , 1997)
